(John 10:10) The thief does not come except to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
According to the dictionary Life is described as follows 1. the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally. 2. the sum of the distinguishing phenomena of organisms, especially metabolism, growth, reproduction, and adaptation to environment. 3. the animate existence or period of animate existence of an individual: to risk one’s life; a short life and a merry one. 4. a corresponding state, existence, or principle of existence conceived of as belonging to the soul: eternal life. 5. the general or universal condition of human existence: Too bad, but life is like that. The word life is found at least 435 times in the Bible and is first found in Genesis 2:7 And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
For the sake of this teaching we’re going to focus on life as the general or universal condition of human existence. When we look at our scripture text we realize that Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. In other words he came to improve the general condition of human existence. From the time of Adam’s fall until the arrival of Jesus Christ mankind was not living or existing in the manner that he was intended and created to. Satan’s plan was to see that all of mankind was destroyed but he never imagined that God through his Grace and Mercy already had a plan to redeem mankind. Because of Jesus and the sacrifice that he made we can truly experience life and experience it abundantly or plentifully; in abundance.
That does not mean we all can be rich or wealthy, however that does mean that we can have a full and healthy life. Sometimes our lives can be so chaotic and rough that we forget the promises of God’s Word. God wants us to live and enjoy life he does not want us confused, sick, depressed, broke, lonely, unhappy, and feeling neglected. He wants and desires for us to be happy and full of joy. The word joy is found in at least 158 verses in the Bible and first mentioned in (1Samuel 18:6) And it happened as they came in, as David returned from striking the Philistine, the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music. Notice how the verse says with joy I believe one of the reasons we don’t experience abundant life is because we don’t approach each day with joy. I know that this is difficult when we are facing life’s problems and trying times or situations. However the word reminds us that (Nehemiah 8:10) Then he said to them, Go eat the fat and drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared. For this day is holy to our LORD. And do not be sorry, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.
Satan wants steal our joy, our peace, and our happiness. He also wants to literally kill us especially when are committed to living a saved life. He wants to steal and destroy your dreams. He wants us to stay sick and depressed. He wants us broke, confused, disgusted, an emotional wreck. Yet the word reminds us that Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. As stated earlier he wants our general and human condition of existence to be one of abundance. So no matter what you or I have been through, are going through, or will go through. God wants nothing but the best for us. Father we Thank You for the promises of your Holy Word.
