“We Are Who We Think We Are”

(Pro 23:7) for as he thinks in his heart, so is he; Eat and drink, he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

If you were to go to YouTube and start typing the name Dennis Green before you can finish typing his name a link to his famous “They are who we thought they were” meltdown will come up. If you Google him a link to that same meltdown comes up. While Dennis Green was a highly successful coach he is mostly remembered for his famous meltdown. I’ve found the words of his meltdown to be a highly useful teachable moment and often use it. When my son tells me about some of his life experiences I often respond to him well you know what minister Dennis Green said and he’ll respond yea I know “They are who we thought they were”. This is so true often in life people are really who we perceive them to be and many times we fool ourselves by thinking otherwise. The same can be said for us personally, we are who we think we are. How we actually perceive ourselves whether good or bad is how we act out our daily lives.

I we perceive ourselves to be Gay we are Gay, if we perceive or think ourselves to be Straight then we are Straight. If we have a positive image of ourselves that is how we carry ourselves in a positive manner. In contrast if we have a low image of ourselves then we exhibit that image of low self-esteem in our daily lives. The word of God both encourages as well as warns us when it comes to our self-image or how we see ourselves.  (Psalms 139:14)  I will praise You; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are marvelous and my soul knows it very well. Now that’s an encourager right there that God has fearfully and wonderfully made each and every one of us. (1Peter 2:9)  But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for possession, so that you might speak of the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; Now this verse should tell every Christian who they really are there is no reason to have low self-esteem when the Word of God Tells you that you are Royal, Holy, and a people for possession as a believer a child of The Most High God you are somebody and don’t let anyone tell you that you are not.

As a child of God we need to always show the confidence of who we are as redeemed children of God walking in his promises. We cannot let the situations of life cause us to lose confidence, we should never forget who we are and whose we are. At the same time we must always stay humble and scripture addresses that.  (Romans 12:2)  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:3)  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think. But set your mind to be right-minded, even as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith. So on the positive don’t let anyone convince you that you are less than the awesome person that God created you to be. On the negative never think so much of yourself that you get wrapped up in your own delusions of grandeur. We are going much deeper, so stay tuned because sometimes there is a huge difference between who we envision ourselves to be and the person that God intended and created us to be.  Be Encouraged and Blessed Minister Mike.
