(Mat 4:6) And he said to Him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down. For it is written, “He shall give His angels charge concerning You, and in their hands they shall bear You up, lest at any time You dash Your foot against a stone.” (Mat 4:7) Jesus said to him, It is written again, “You shall not tempt the Lord your God.”
In our scripture text we find Jesus being tempted by satan and satan actually uses the word as he tempts Jesus. Here is the text that satan is quoting Psa 91:11)For He shall give His angels charge over You, to keep You in all Your ways. (Psa 91:12) They shall bear You up in theirhands, lest You dash your foot against a stone. While satan is actually quoting scripture he is using it out of context. Jesus knowing this and responds to him in like manner using the word. Here is the basis for Jesus response Deu 6:16) You shall not tempt Jehovah your God as you tempted in Massah.
While the Psalmist is referring to the protection that God affords each and every one of us when our enemies and foes are out to get us. satan in essence is tempting Jesus to actually commit suicide. From the beginning when satan tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden he has always twisted the truth. That is why it is so important for us not only to read but to study the word of God. It is also important for us to study the word of God in context. Just as Jesus used the word to combat satan we also need to learn how to do the same.
satan uses various tools at his disposal to twist and manipulate the Word of God. satan is in some churches on a regular basis using some who may not even be aware of the fact that they are not properly teaching The Word of God. This why it is so important for you to personally become a student of The Word. (Hos 4:5) And you shall stumble in the day, and the prophet also shall stumble with you in the night, and I will cut off your mother. (Hos 4:6) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you from being priest to Me. Since you have forgotten the Law of your God, I will also forget your sons, even I. satan knows what we should and shouldn’t do because he knows The Word of God. Many times it is not what we are doing that keeps us in bondage but what we aren’t. satan knows that when we neglect to do certain things we’ll stay in bondage or our spiritual and personal growth will become stagnant.
He also knows the promises of God and will do everything in his power to keep us from doing the things that we need to do in order to realize those promises. satan has been around a long time and he knows the consequences of a life devoid of The Word. With so much twisting, manipulating, and false interpretaion of The Word these days it is so important to know the truth. One of the first scriptures that I memorized as a child was (2Ti 2:15) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth(KJV). (2Ti 2:15) Do your best to win God’s approval as a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed and who teaches only the true message(CEV).
