One of the most common mistakes Christians make is not taking time to study Jewish customs and traditions. We often focus solely on the New Testament scriptures and neglect the commandments, laws, and customs of the Old Testament. Once we accept Jesus Christ as our savior we become heirs to the promises given to Abraham. This is why understanding and knowing Jewish customs are important to us as Christians.
One such custom or principle is that of the dedication of the first born to God. If you have ever seen the movie the Ten Commandments you are aware that Pharaoh did not let the children of Israel go until after the death of his first born a son. It was the plaque of the first born that finally broke Pharaoh. The first born whether child or animal of Egypt was destroyed, however wherever the death angel saw the sign of the blood on the door post the first born of the household as well as the cattle were spared.
So in our base scripture we find that God instructs Moses that because he spared the first born of the children of Israel when they were in bondage in Egypt. The first born were his whether of man or beast. That principle or concept of the first born belonging to God holds true in the New Testament as well. We find these words in relationship to Jesus. (Mat 1:24) And Joseph, being roused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife, (Mat 1:25) and did not know her until she bore her son, the First-born. And he called His name JESUS. (Col 1:18) And He is the Head of the body, the church, who is the Beginning, the First-born from the dead, that He may be pre-eminent in all things.
We all should be dedicated to the lord, however if you are the first born in your family according to custom. There is a mandate a special call on your life you are specially chosen of God that is why you were born first. The reason that you’ve struggled through life is because you don’t realize whose you are. You belong to God I encourage those of you who are the first born to study God’s word and find out who you really are. For those of you who are the first born male in the family this applies to you also. As for the rest of us who are not the first born of our families God’s word is there to show us who we are for all of us have a calling a special mandate on our lives. Be encouraged and Blessed Minister Mike.
